The Department of Bio Construction aims to facilitate the implementation of areas where technology transfer is possible, education and awareness  from practical experiences, and the implementation of sustainable systems. Focused on a practical approach, recycling, reuse, remake and maximize the use of local materials to create spaces accessible and delightful for all.

TÉCNICAS

TIERRA - EARTH

The earth  has been used  as a construction material in all times and places. Every culture has become familiar with its features and have learned to develop their management and technicality. It is important to keep this knowledge alive and active as it has been abandoned and may eventually disappear. The earth as a building teaches us to study and understand our environment, making us sharers and aware of how we interact and live. We develop educational programs  and prototyping in  Waddle and dubb,  Adobe, Superadobe, Ramed Earth and Cobb, reinforcing with soil studies and proper design the adaptation of these techniques to various thermal conditions in Colombia.

Illustrating the community  the huge footprint Pet bottles create in their ecosystem is one of our goals  teaching this technique. The behaviour of consuption and  disposal of Pet Bottes bottless illustrates the lack of awareness  of the processes around us. The consolidation of a recycling movement is needed urgently due to no responsability  towards consumisim. Changing the perception of a PET bottle by using it as building  material is a step towards the creation of awareness  and responsability of what we  have already created.

Straw bales have a thermal quality  for cold dry areas because it creates a large mass of insulation. Maximize local resources such as hay bales in the Savannah area has led us to build with this local resource and understand its qualities,  adapt its design and finish plaster to the  local weather and soil qualities.

TIERRA ENSACADA- EARTHBAG

EarthBag Building,   also known as super adobe, is an incredibly innovative upgrade to the military system of building bunkers with sandbags. Developed by Iranian-born architect Nader Khalili, It uses long polypropylene bags filled with varying materials (usually local earth) sometimes stabilized with a small percentage of lime or cement, stacked one atop the other and compacted. Barbed wire between the layers provides necessary tensile strength. Superadobe employs the time-tested strength and beauty of the arch to build self-supporting, monolithic structures that are resistant to fire, flood, earthquakes, hurricanes, and bullets. They’ve passed wind, compression, and seismic tests, exceeding ICBO requirements. And they’re beautiful to boot.
